Characters

Try our Players' Almanac to learn more about the world and what sort of character concept you'd like to play.

The world of Phoenix Reborn is designed to give a clear framework to build a character concept on. Characters belong to one of the three protector guilds, each of which is associated with the classic fantasy archetypes of warrior (War), scout/rogue (Survival) and mage (Essence).

The guilds have access to unique skills, and they are designed to compliment each other - a balanced party is a must!

The range of character concepts that can work within each of the guilds is vast, from a duelist in the Guild of War, to a potion Brewer in the Guild of Survival, to a Librarian in the Guild of Essence. Contact the ref team and we'll be happy to discuss you ideas and how it can work in Phoenix Reborn!

1. What is your characters personality?

Before thinking about skills and guilds, take some time to think about your character concept. Decide what sort of personality your character will have by considering questions such as: what motivates them, what do they love, what do they fear? Are they someone who achieves their goals through forceful action, subtle manipulations, or thoughtful consideration?

3. Pick your skills

Starting characters get a number of experience points to buy skills for their characters. Starting characters usually have 12 points to spend, but additional points can be awarded, depending on the point in the story the current plot arc is at; the nearer the end the more points a new character will have to ensure new characters aren't too far behind established ones.

Each guild has its own skill list to pick from. Many of the skills are unique to each guild. When multiple guilds have access to the same skill it is usually at differing costs, reflecting the specialisms of each guild.

All guilds have access to the same mundane healing skills.

2. What Protector Guild would you like to be in?

Each protector guild has its traditional strengths:

  • The Guild of War specialises in (you guessed it!) combat.

  • The Guild of Survival specialises in scouting, roguery, and bows.

  • The Guild of Essence specialises in magic.

You may want to pick the guild which best fits you general concept, although there is a home for all types of personalities in any of the three protector guilds.

4. Contact the refs to discuss!

The last step is to reach out to one of the refs to discuss your ideas and develop your final character.

We want you to play what YOU want to play, so as long as the core concept doesn't violate a key concept of the game (e.g., no "dark" magic, no priests, etc.) we will make it work!
